Martinez delivers latest Everton injury update ahead of West Ham clash
Everton manager Roberto Martinez reveals Phil Jagielka will be sidelined for a few weeks with a hamstring injury
Roberto Martinez has revealed that Everton defender Phil Jagielka will miss Saturday’s clash against West Ham United as well as England’s friendly next Wednesday.
The 31-year-old centre-half, who is expected to start alongside Gary Cahill in Roy Hodgson’s World Cup side this summer, picked up a hamstring injury in training this week.
I don’t think it will be a long-term injury but he’ll be missing for a few weeks
And Toffees manager Martinez said that the Everton captain is expected to be sidelined for a few weeks due to the injury setback.
“Phil Jagielka has felt his hamstring a little bit over the last two days,” Martinez told his pre-match media conference.
“He is going to be missing the game at the weekend and won’t be available for England. I don’t think it will be a long-term injury but he’ll be missing for a few weeks.”
Martinez, whose side have lacked goals in recent months, lifted the lid on Lacina Traore’s injury, which the on-loan forward picked up during the warm-up at Stamford Bridge last Saturday.
And the 40-year-old manager revealed that Everton are working alongside the striker’s parent club Monaco to ensure there is no long-term damage.
“Lacina Traore got injured in the warm-up in the game against Chelsea. Today, we’ll find out exactly what route we’re going down in terms of the best possible treatment,” Martinez added.
“We’ve been talking with his parent club and we’re going to decide what is the best way to approach the injury.”
He continued: “We need to remember the type of player that he is. He is a sprinter. It’s very similar to the one we picked up with Gerard.
“You have to be very careful how you treat them so they don’t come back. With Lacina, he had an injury a few months back and now he was fully fit, and without fatigue, that injury is a little bit of a worry.
“We need to make sure we treat it well for the short-term and long-term.”
Martinez, who is without long-term injury casualties Darron Gibson, Arouna Kone and Bryan Oviedo, added that Romelu Lukaku and Antolin Alcaraz are available for selection this weekend.
“They’re both fine. Romelu has been training really, really well in the last 10 days. He wasn’t available for the Chelsea game but he could have made the squad.
“Antolin the same. He is always working really well. We need to control him. They are both available for Saturday.”
