The Spain international has been nursing a knee ligament injury which the 29-year-old picked up in the west London side’s 3-1 victory over Manchester United at Stamford Bridge on 19 January.
We don’t want to risk him. If it was the last game of the season, I would say let’s go and do it
Torres has scored four goals in 17 Premier League appearances under Mourinho this season, including the winner against Manchester City in west London in late October.
Although Chelsea’s record signing won’t face Newcastle this weekend, Torres could be in line to face West Bromwich Albion next Tuesday.
“Almost there but not quite there,” Mourinho said when asked about Torres’ fitness. “We don’t want to risk him. If it was the last game of the season, I would say let’s go and do it.
“But [there are] lots of matches left and it’s not right to risk it now. If you lose a player now, you risk losing him for a long time.
“It’s not a moment to risk players. It’s a moment to have them all. So no risk. Tuesday is a better possibility.”
Mourinho continued: “We have a couple of little things that we need to assess, not really injuries, but in terms of injuries it’s only Nando and [Marco] van Ginkel.”
The Chelsea boss added that £11m signing Mohamed Salah could feature against the Magpies at Stamford Bridge.
“Salah is selected. So when he’s selected, he can play,” added Mourinho.
