Sochi 2014: The greatest… Norway’s Bjoerndalen reaches lucky no. 13
Sochi 2014: Norway's Ole Einar Bjoerndalen becomes most decorated Winter Olympian with 13th medal in mixed team relay
Ole Einar Bjoerndalen has become the most decorated Winter Olympian after winning the mixed relay with his Norwegian team in the Laura Cross-country and Biathlon Ski Centre for his 13th Olympic medal.
The 40-year-old shot clean in both of his visits to the range to set up Emil Hegle Svendsen in the final leg and his compatriot made no errors to secure the gold with female teammates Tora Berger and Tiril Eckhoff, over half a minute ahead of Czech Republic in second and nearly a minute better than Italy in third.
Bjoerndalen overtakes compatriot Bjorn Daehlie, who won 12 medals in cross-country skiing between 1992 and 1998.
The Norwegians led virtually from the outset, and with a team consisting of medallists from earlier events in the Games they never really looked likely to be caught.
With his eighth Olympic gold, Bjoerndalen also tied Daehlie’s tally.
