David Silva and Edin Dzeko scored either side of half-time as 10-man Manchester City edged to a 2-0 victory over Hull City at KC Stadium.

Spain international Silva put the visitors into a 14th-minute lead after Vincent Kompany had been issued with a straight red for a foul on Nikica Jelavic before Dzeko sealed three points on the stroke of full-time.

And there was plenty of praise for City’s resilient performance from the professionals on Twitter, and here is a selection of our favourite posts in chronological order.

Former Manchester United defender Alan Tonge ‏(@Alan_Tonge) is hoping Kompany’s red card will rule him out of the derby – but it won’t: “Is Kompany out of the derby now?”

Witty Ashes-winning captain Michael Vaughan ‏(@MichaelVaughan) expects clumsy Martin Demichelis to struggle without his Belgian team-mate: “Don’t worry City fans Demichelis will be fine on his own…….”

Injured City striker Sergio Aguero ‏(@aguerosergiokun) celebrates Silva’s opener: “Golazooooooo @21LVA”

Ex-Stoke City defender Danny Higginbotham (‏@Higginbotham05) calls on City’s giant Argentine defender to step up to the mark following Kompany’s dismissal and Silva’s strike: “Man City’s best defender sent off yet they still take the lead. Time for dimechelis to step up.”

City captain Vincent Kompany ‏(@VincentKompany) feels harshly treated by the referee: “Proud of the guys! Phenomenal shift they have put in again! Hull 0 – 2 City. Not saying it is or it isn’t a sending off. Here’s for you to judge. I remain proud as ever of my team’s performance! #MCFC”

England legend Gary Lineker ‏(@GaryLineker) is impressed by City’s spirit: “Gutsy, vital and impressive win for Manchester City with 10 men.”

City defender Micah Richards ‏(@MicahRichards) reserves special praise for the Citizens’s two Spanish stars: “David Silva is special! Though Javi Garcia was class today too! Great effort by all the lads.”
