Aviva Premiership: London Irish sign Scotland international Geoff Cross

Glasgow Warriors prop Geoff Cross

London Irish have confirmed that Scotland international forward Geoff Cross will join the Aviva Premiership side in the summer.

The 31-year-old tighthead prop has been largely overlooked for Edinburgh in the Pro12 this season and joined Glasgow Warriors on loan until the end of the season after featuring in Scotland’s Six Nations campaign to take his international caps up to 28.

“Moving down to London Irish is a fantastic opportunity for me,” said Cross. “Having met with Brian, discussed the vision of the club and seen the new training facility it was clear to see the intent the club has moving forward.

“Leaving Edinburgh was a difficult decision and I will leave with many fond memories, however I am excited to be moving to Sunbury and look forward to the challenge ahead.”

Cross, who put his early rugby career on hold to become a qualified medical doctor, made 130 appearances for Edinburgh since joining from Border Reivers in 2006, and could make his debut for the Warriors on Friday against the Ospreys.

Earlier this month, Cross admitted it was the right time to seek a new challenge.

“I’ve been an Edinburgh player for a long time now. I’ve made some good friends and shared in some special moments on the pitch,” he said.

“After eight years and aged 31, I think the time is right to seek a change and a new challenge. I’m very excited by this next chapter of my career.”

The Exiles’ director of rugby Brian Smith believes his latest signing will bring competition to the front row which will boost his squad for the new campaign.

“It is great to have a player of Geoff’s talent and experience joining our squad next season,” he said.

“He is a genuine international tighthead who has performed exceptionally well in the recent Six Nations championship.”
