Alan Pardew’s headbutt on David Meyler was the biggest talking point at the KC Stadium as Newcastle United were 3-1 winners against Hull City.

The incident happened in the 72nd minute when Hull midfielder Meyler clashed with Pardew as he looked to retrieve the ball for a throw-in, with the Magpies boss appearing to push his head into the Irishman’s face.

Unsurprisingly, there was a huge reaction to Twitter as the professionals gave their thoughts on Pardew losing his head. Here is a selection of our favourite posts.

England legend Gary Lineker (‏@GaryLineker) can’t defend Pardew: “Alan Pardew has just head-butted David Meyler. Yes head-butted. Inexcusable from a manager.”

West Brom goalkeeper Ben Foster ‏(@BenFoster) can’t believe the reports emerging from the KC Stadium: “Tell me it’s not true that Alan Pardew has just headbutted David Meyler of Hull….?!!!!!”

Former United midfielder Alan Tonge ‏(@Alan_Tonge) is shocked: “Pardew has butted someone!. Red card. Deary me.”

Norwich City legend Darren Huckerby ‏(@hucks6dh6) alludes to the potential interested from WWE legend Vince McMahon: “As if Pardew has just Nutted one of the Hull players #WWE”

Former Wimbledon striker Jason Euell ‏(@jasoneuell) enjoys the Newcastle manager’s reaction: “Pards head butting Meyler.. then plays on it like he didn’t do anything. #Priceless”

Irishman Sean St Ledger (‏@seanstledger12) is in no doubt that it is a headbutt: “Take the last tweet back!! Looks like a headbutt if I’ve ever seen one!”

QPR midfielder and former Magpies captain Joseph Barton ‏(@Joey7Barton) reckons the incident has been overhyped: “Oh Pards! Nooooooo! […] I bet its nothing.”

Comedian Jack Whitehall (‏@jackwhitehall) imagines what Pardew may have said to Meyler: “Look let’s not jump to conclusions for all we know Pardew was leaning into that guy to whisper something, like ‘you daft c**t’ #lovelyman”

Ex-Leicester City man Robbie Savage (‏@RobbieSavage8) is in disbelief: “Couldn’t believe my eyes when I saw Pardew throw his head into Meyler, absolutely disgraceful behaviour from a manager!”

England rugby legend Matt Dawson ‏(@matt9dawson) wants Pardew banned: “What the dickens is football coming too. A manager actually head butted a player!!! #banhimfromthesport”

Troy Townsend ‏(@Towno10) cuts through Pardew’s excuses: “Someone please tell him “I tried to push him away with my head = headbutt in anyone’s book.”

Barton (‏@Joey7Barton) is back: “Seen Pardew incident. As per usual. Massively over-hyped… Don’t let a couple of stupid incidents detract from the job he has done at Newcastle. Especially with what goes on behind the scenes there. Got a lot of time for Pardew. Regardless of what people think, he is a top manager. One of the best I’ve worked with.”

Former Manchester United defender Mikael Silvestre ‏(@IamMSilvestre) chimes in: “UN-PARDS-ONABLE #hullnew #angermanagement”

Do you agree with Piers Morgan’s (@piersmorgan) view? “Outrageous behaviour by a manager, Pardew’s disgraced Newcastle and must resign or be sacked. […] To those defending Pardew, how many managers could headbutt someone in any workplace and not be sacked?”
