The Reds moved to the top of the Premier League table on Sunday thanks to an emphatic 4-0 victory over Tottenham Hotspur at Anfield.
It’s going to be very difficult, but we just control what we can do
With title rivals Chelsea and Manchester City still due to visit Anfield before the season is out, Liverpool have their fate in their own hands in the race for the top-flight crown.
And Rodgers has been delighted by his side’s resilience and spirit this season as they gradually established themselves as genuine contenders.
“I don’t think anybody expected us to be where we are,” said Rodgers.
“The last few seasons we have been eighth and we finished seventh last year. We go into every game to win and I expect it.
“What’s been great to see is that idea and methodology of our work bearing fruit in the game.
“There are still some great teams up there and some world-class managers.
“We understand it’s going to be very difficult, but we just control what we can do – and if we can do that, we’ll just see where it takes us.”
Rodgers also revealed his delight at seeing Liverpool fans start to dream of winning the title in May.
“It’s fantastic the supporters now have hope because there are only six games to go,” said Rodgers.
“I enjoy it, it’s why I’ve worked hard all of my life since I was a young boy, travelling throughout Europe to find out about some of the top leagues and teams.
“We love playing at Anfield. The support on Sunday was incredible and that’s only going to intensify as the season goes on. You can see it works for us, rather than against us.”
