Borussia Dortmund rediscovered their clinical side after a disappointing defeat and performance against Hamburg last week, hitting three past Nürnberg to go second in the Bundesliga. Added to their four goals away to Zenit St. Petersburg in the Champions League, Dortmund fans will be happy with how their team has bounced back. Their attacking performance will be of comfort too as they aim to cement their place behind champions-elect Bayern Munich. As for Nürnberg they won’t want to travel to Dortmund any time soon; their last win there was in 1990.
Werder Bremen won for the first time in 2014, defeating Northern rivals Hamburg 1-0 in the 100th Bundesliga encounter between the two. Their players must have been spurred on from the fantastic fan choreography pre-match. Bremen are unbeaten in the last seven home Bundesliga matches against Hamburg and the win increases the gap to them and the relegation play-off to six points. Still work to do for Mirko Slomka.
Bayer Leverkusen lost their fifth match in a row in all competitions at home to high-flying Mainz. Leverkusen’s top four hopes are now in jeopardy as ex-Liverpool defender Sami Hyypiä comes under increasing pressure. The opposite can be said for Mainz coach Thomas Tuchel. One of the most lauded coaches in Germany, his team now sit in a Europa League position after losing just once in their last nine Bundesliga matches. Remember the name.
After the 6-1 Champions League thrashing by Real Madrid, Schalke were comprehensively beaten 5-1 by Bayern Munich. Former Chelsea man Arjen Robben was star of the show as he hit a hat-trick. Bayern have now scored two goals or more in their last 15 bundesliga matches, a new record, and are a staggering 20 points ahead of Dortmund. All far too easy for the treble winners.
Statistic: Hoffenheim’s 6-2 win over Wolfsburg saw 100 goals scored in their 23 Bundesliga matches, an average of 4.3 goals per match!
