Brendan Rodgers has overcome a “nightmare” start at Liverpool in style, according to former Reds defender Jamie Carragher.

The Merseyside club are well on course to secure a top-four finish this season and are also in the title race heading into the final 10 games of the campaign, trailing leaders Chelsea by just four points.

And Carragher, who played under Rodgers during his first season in charge at Anfield as the Reds finished seventh, praised the Northern Irishman for the impressive manner in which he has transformed the club’s fortunes.

“When he came in it was difficult to start with,” Carragher told talkSPORT.

“It was a nightmare for him, not the August gone, but the one before, the transfer deadline [in August 2012] when he missed out on a couple of players.

“It wasn’t until January [2013] when he got Philippe Coutinho in, he brought Daniel Sturridge in, that you felt that he was really stamping his mark on the team and putting players in who he wanted.

“Luis Suarez at the time was the only striker, so to bring those two players in, if you look at Liverpool’s record since, not just the start of this season, probably since January [2013] and those players coming in to the team, it’s probably been as good as anyone’s.”
