Chelsea 2 Galatasaray 0: Jose Mourinho says the Blues are back where they belong after last-16 victory
Jose Mourinho declared that Chelsea are back where they belong after booking their place in the Champions League quarter-finals with victory over Galatasaray.
Following a 1-1 draw in the first leg, Samuel Eto’o fired past Fernando Muslera in just the fourth minute to put the Blues into the lead at Stamford Bridge.
All the other big clubs are there and we are there, the players belong to be there
And defender Gary Cahill wrapped up a 3-1 aggregate win when he turned home the ball after John Terry’s header was saved three minutes before half-time.
The victory makes Chelsea the first English club to book their place in the last eight of Europe’s elite club competition – and Mourinho was thrilled to see his side make it through.
“We are a club of the Champions League and now we are among the top eight clubs in the world,” Mourinho told ITV Sport.
“All the other big clubs are there and we are there, the players belong to be there.
“It is different to last season because last season was Europa League at a different level, but to come from the Europa League to the quarter-finals of the Champions League is important for the players, is important for the club.
“This was a difficult tie and one where everyone thinks we have to do it. The reality is not like that.
“Galatasaray is a big club with a lot of experienced players – especially away it is a very difficult match [against them]. I think we did very well.”
