Jan Vertonghen believes Tottenham Hotspur aren’t chasing just Liverpool in the race for a top-four finish.

Spurs moved to within four points of fourth-placed Manchester City after a 1-0 victory over Cardiff City at White Hart Lane on Sunday.

It is not just Liverpool we are chasing; I think there are other teams who can drop down

Liverpool were widely expected to battle with Spurs for the final Champions League spot but the Reds moved into second after their win at Southampton.

And Vertonghen admitted Spurs must improve ahead of games against Arsenal, Chelsea and Liverpool in March.

“We needed those three points, but we will have to improve because we are playing better sides in March,” Vertonghen said.

“It is not just Liverpool we are chasing; I think there are other teams who can drop down.

“We are just watching fourth place – it does not matter who we catch.

“It was not our best game (on Sunday) but we are back on track after losing to Norwich.”

Vertonghen has scored eight goals in 65 appearances for Tottenham since moving to north London from Ajax in 2012.
