Joe Allen says Liverpool wants to replicate their performance against Arsenal ahead of their trip to Manchester United next weekend.

The Reds were emphatic 5-1 winners against the Gunners last month as Brendan Rodgers’s men underlined their title credentials against the then Premier League leaders.

Obviously it’s difficult to play to that level all the time

Liverpool can move 14 points clear of fourth-placed United with victory next weekend, and Allen spoke about the secret of the Reds’s success under Rodgers this season.

“I don’t think I’ve seen a better performance in 20 minutes of football from the first whistle. Our target now is to make sure we do that in every game,” Allen said.

“Obviously it’s difficult to play to that level all the time, but that’s our dream and what we’re aiming to do. How clinical we were with the ball and how many chances we created was one thing.

“But with Arsenal being such a great footballing team as well, the way we stopped them playing and won the ball back and pressed them hard was equally as pleasing.”

Allen added that he is unsurprised by the progress of certain players under Rodgers over the past 18 months.

“If you look at the way players have developed in the last 18 months here, it’s great to see and as a young player it gives you a massive confidence boost to know that you’ll play.

“I know it can be difficult at other clubs, but it certainly breeds optimism into you and helps you make that step up into being a regular in the first team. I’m not surprised at the advances that have been made.

“As players, you are always confident that you can achieve the things you set out to do. You have to be. There are so many games throughout the season that there are always going to be setbacks along the way.

“But I think if you ask any player here, we all have 100 per cent faith in each other and in the staff behind us to achieve some great things. We are certainly here to bring success back to this club.”
