Steven Gerrard warned Liverpool not to get carried away in the title race after the Reds moved to within a point of Chelsea thanks to victory over Sunderland.

Liverpool eventually made the breakthrough just before half-time through talismanic captain Gerrard, who fired a powerful free-kick past stationary Sunderland goalkeeper Vito Mannone.

We’ve won nothing yet, we need to keep going

The Reds appeared to be coasting to victory when Daniel Sturridge’s deflected strike handed the home side a 2-0 lead with 42 minutes remaining at Anfield.

However, Sunderland substitute Ki-Sung Yueng netted from close range in the 76th minute to ensure a nervy finish, with Jozy Altidore glancing a late effort narrowly wide.

“You’ve got to give Sunderland a little bit of credit. They’ve come here to shut up shop and make it difficult for us,” Gerrard told Sky Sports.

“They put five at the back and a couple of holding midfielders – it was difficult to break down. We need to learn though, when we go two goals in front we can’t concede and make it nervy at the end.

“We should have controlled the game and passed it better. But hopefully we learn that with the remaining games.

“But great win.”

Gerrard added: “We’ve won nothing yet, we need to keep going.”

The 33-year-old Liverpool skipper revelled in his strike after surrendering free-kick duty to Luis Suarez for the majority of the season.

“I don’t usually get a go,” Gerrard said.

“Suarez has been magnificent from set-pieces and we usually leave them to him. But sometimes the goalkeeper is expecting Luis to take it so I can step in. Thankfully tonight I got it right.

“He let me take one. He wouldn’t let me take one at Cardiff. But it doesn’t matter because he gets the goals.”
