‘Liverpool’s jaded Coutinho should be dropped for Man United trip’

John Aldridge believes that Joe Allen is likely to be handed a starting spot ahead of Philippe Coutinho for Liverpool’s crunch clash at Manchester United this weekend.

The Reds travel to Old Trafford on Sunday afternoon looking for a victory to move them a step closer to qualification for next season’s Champions League.

You need grafters when you go to places like Old Trafford

Liverpool secured a 1-0 winover the Red Devils in the Premier League clash at Anfield earlier this season – and ex-striker Aldridge reckons that Brendan Rodgers will opt to hand Allen a place in the side ahead of Coutinho.

“A lot of debate will centre on the type of team Brendan Rodgers will pick at Old Trafford, I am sure,” Aldridge wrote in his Liverpool Echo column. “For me, I think Joe Allen will start, and I can see exactly why, as well.

“You need grafters when you go to places like Old Trafford, and a midfield of Allen, Jordan Henderson and Steven Gerrard is full of graft.

“United struggle in central midfield, it is well documented, so I would make that part of the field as strong as possible.

“If that means leaving Philippe Coutinho on the bench, then so be it. I think Raheem Sterling has to start, and Coutinho has looked a little jaded in the last couple of games.”
