Man United 3 Olympiacos 0: Wayne Rooney and Ryan Giggs admit that the Red Devils "owed" the win to the club's fans
Wayne Rooney admitted that Manchester United “owed” their fans victory after the Red Devils booked their place in the Champions League quarter-finals at the expense of Olympiacos.
Trailing 2-0 from the first leg, Robin van Persie scored a penalty in the 25th minute and finished a sweeping move just before half-time at Old Trafford.
We owe the fans this result because they’ve been unbelievable
And the Netherlands striker fired home a free-kick in the 51st minute to complete his hat-trick and wrap up a 3-2 aggregate victory.
“The desire to win got us through,” Rooney told Sky Sports. “The fans have been fantastic again tonight and they deserved a big result and big performance. We’re delighted with it.
“We owed ourselves [a result like this] and the fans, the manager, everyone. This a great result and hopefully it can kick start our season.”
Meanwhile, veteran midfielder Ryan Giggs urged the Red Devils to use the win as a building block towards a positive end to the season.
“It was very good,” said Giggs. “It was always going to be tough to not concede and score three goals. But we managed it and with the help of the crowd, we got past the finish line.
“Of course there’s pressure, especially after Sunday [the 3-0 defeat by Liverpool]. We owe the fans this result because they’ve been unbelievable.
“We hope it will be a turning point. We’ve had good performances and good results and not followed them up – so that’s what we’ve got to do now. Not get carried away, just continue with performances like we’ve done today.”
