David Moyes insisted that he was not surprised by the support he received from Manchester United fans at Old Trafford after his side came from behind to beat Aston Villa.

A plane carrying an anti-Moyes banner was booed by some home supporters as it flew over Old Trafford in the second minute of the match.

Ashley Westwood’s free-kick put Villa ahead in the 13th minute but Wayne Rooney soon headed United level and scored a penalty to make it 2-1 on the stroke of half-time.

Juan Mata then slotted home a third in the 57th minute with his first goal for the club, before Javier Hernandez made it 4-1 in stoppage time.

“I’ve been saying all the time since I’ve been here, the crowd have been great and they’ve been terrific for me as well because at times we haven’t done as well as we’d like,” Moyes told BT Sport.

“We didn’t start the game well but I’ve got to say that the crowd were brilliant the way they were behind the team.

“I’ve always felt that’s the way it is. Every supporter I bump into, they know exactly what it’s like at Manchester United. I’ve got to say the crowd inside Old Trafford today showed that.”

Moyes also reserved special praise for man-of-the-match Rooney after a sparkling display from the England international.

“He’s a top player,” added Moyes. “He’s been great since the start of the season. His form and the way he’s been playing has been very good.”
