Man United don’t give up, Phil Jones warns Olympiacos

Manchester United defender Phil Jones promises the Red Devils will do everything possible to overturn their two-goal deficit

Phil Jones has warned Olympiacos that it is not in Manchester United’s nature to give up ahead of the second leg of their Champions League last-16 tie.

The Red Devils, who are currently seventh in the Premier League, trail the Greek champions 2-0 on aggregate after a surprise loss in Athens almost three weeks ago.

United currently boast a 100 per cent record at Old Trafford in Europe this season after wins against Real Sociedad, Bayer Leverkusen and Shakhtar Donetsk.

And Jones promised United would produce a performance to lift the Old Trafford crowd after a humiliating 3-0 loss to bitter rivals Liverpool on Sunday.

“We don’t give up, you know,” Jones told Uefa’s website.

“Our mentality is to keep training hard, keep doing the right things and eventually it will turn.

“We truly believe that, and that’s what will happen. We’ve got to be patient and stick at it but it will come.

“We didn’t play as well as we’d like to have played [in Greece] but there’s no point dwelling on it now.

“We’ve got to deal with what’s happened and look forward to the future, and the future is putting in a performance at Old Trafford that will lift the crowd, lift the players and turn it around.

“Only we can do that.”

Man United v Olympiacos: Pre-match facts

• United have a 100% home record in the Champions League, having beaten Bayer 04 Leverkusen, Real Sociedad and Shakhtar Donetsk. Another victory would spell their best sequence in the competition at Old Trafford since 2007/08, when they went on to win the competition.

• United have mounted a successful fightback only once after a first-leg defeat in the Champions League. That came when they overwhelmed Roma 7-1 after a 2-1 reverse in Italy in the 2006/07 quarter-finals.

• Shinji Kagawa’s Borussia Dortmund beat Olympiacos 3-1 at home but lost 1-0 away in the 2011-12 group stage.

• United have scored 548 goals in Uefa competition and conceded 299.
