Man United transfers: Red Devils legend expects summer clear-out
Peter Schmeichel is expecting a summer clear-out at Manchester United as David Moyes builds towards second season in charge
Peter Schmeichel is expecting a summer clear-out at Manchester United as David Moyes looks to turn around the Red Devils’ fortunes.
United have made a stuttering start to life under the Scot following his appointment as Sir Alex Ferguson’s successor last summer.
Moyes has seen his side crash out of both domestic cup competitions and struggle in the Premier League and Champions League, with his side currently 18 points behind leaders Chelsea in the English top flight.
This summer, I think you’ll see a lot of players leave the club
And Schmeichel feels that the new manager is likely to offload a number of players who he feels have not performed this term.
“To be a Manchester United player, that carries a responsibility,” Schmeichel told Sky Sports. “You fight, never give in, even on days when it’s not happening for you, you still have to try.
“But I’ve seen, throughout the course of this season, some players who haven’t done that and this disappoints me.
“I think he [Moyes] will have learned who he can trust and who he can’t trust. And this summer, I think you’ll see a lot of players leave the club.”
Schmeichel also insisted that Moyes is the right man to replace Ferguson at Old Trafford.
“I think David is a great choice,” he continued. “He’s shown he’s got the pedigree, he’s got the ability, he can stay in a place for a very long time, he showed that at Everton.
“At United, we want our managers to stay a long time but this year has been really tough on him. He’ll learn a lot about himself, everyone will learn a lot about him and he will come out a lot stronger.
“I think he needs to sign a few players, how many I don’t know!”
