Steven Gerrard scored either side of half-time as Liverpool were emphatic 3-0 winners against Manchester United.

The 33-year-old netted a brace of penalties but squandered the chance to score a hat-trick from the spot after Nemanja Vidic was sent off for foul on Daniel Sturridge, with Luis Suarez netting a third.

After an enthralling north-west derby, here is a selection of our favourite Twitter reaction from the professionals, past and present, in chronological order.

Ajax forward Ryan Babel ‏(@RyanBabel) was never worried that Gerrard might fluff his lines from the spot: “If Steve G stands behind a penalty you know u can walk already with slowly to the midline… #GuaranteedGoal”

Hull City midfielder David Meyler (@DavidMeyler7) was similarly confident about Gerrard’s penalty-taking skills: “Never in doubt, Captain Fantastic! #Gerrard”

Liverpool cult hero Luis Garcia ‏(@LuchoGarcia14) has his say: “That’s what a meant!!! He’s the man.. M.United 0- Reds 1 (S.Gerrard)”

Former United defender Danny Higginbotham (‏@Higginbotham05) gives David Moyes some tactical advice: “Welbeck for either Mata or Januzaj at half time. Need to get some pace and stretch Liverpool. Liverpool have no fear of pace so play high.”

Leicester City midfielder Gary Taylor-Fletcher (‏@GTF_12) can’t understand how Rafael escapes a second booking for a deliberate handball: “How is that not a red. Defo a pen, defo a booking.”

Former Newcastle United goalkeeper Shaka Hislop (‏@ShakaHislop) has an interesting take on man management: “Moyes should put Rafael to stand facing a corner in the dressing room during the half time team talk.”

Ex-United winger Andrei Kanchelskis (‏@AAKanchelskis) sums events up for Red Devils fans: “Another penalty for Liverpool and another nail in Uniteds coffin…”

Former Liverpool and United striker Michael Owen (‏@themichaelowen) critiques the Red Devils side: “Think of United great teams of the past. All had pace. It’s non-existent in this team. Can’t have Mata as a wide man. Need to play inside.”

Prompting a response from United fan Rory Mcilroy ‏(@McIlroyRory): “@themichaelowen can’t have RVP, Rooney and Mata all play thru the middle… Looks like all 3 on the pitch doesn’t quite work.”

Ireland forward Cillian Sheridan (‏@CillianSheridan) could be right? “Has Rafael got something on Mark Clattenburg? Some pictures or a video maybe”

Celebrity Arsenal fan Piers Morgan ‏(@piersmorgan) can’t resist laughing at Robin van Persie’s expense: “Oh dear, Van Pursestrings… didn’t that little boy inside teach you how to head the ball while he did all that screaming? @Persie_Official”

Former Aston Villa star Ian Taylor ‏(@IanTaylor7) gives Vidic some advice: “As @rioferdy5 used to say…. #stayonyourfeet”

Ex-West Ham striker John Hartson (‏@JohnHartson10) wants Moyes to be honest in his post-match appraisal: “Hope Moyes has respect for the united fans to speak the truth post match.. Rafael, Jones and Vidic have let the team down badly today..”

United legend Gary Neville (‏@GNev2) can’t take any more Twitter: “Unacceptable that! Well done to united fans!! That’s it three days off this! It’s gonna be raw!!”

Former Liverpool midfielder Dietmar (‏@DietmarHamann) predicts Sir Alex Ferguson will return: “Fergie will be asked the question tonight whether he will come back for the remainder of the season.”

Unsurprisingly, QPR midfielder Joey Barton ‏(@Joey7Barton) has something to say: “It happens to all the great sides. Liverpool have had a tough time since the 80’s. Arsenal having a tough period […] City had years of struggle as did Chelsea before the money came. United fans, regardless of what you think, you don’t have a divine right […] The Fergie factor has gone. The fear factor around OT is slowly dissipating. It happens to all the dynasties over the course of time.”

Liverpool right-back Glen Johnson ‏(@glen_johnson) hails a big three points: “What a result….. Great performance and another big 3 points!!!”

Reds goalkeeper Simon Mignolet ‏(@SMignolet) chimes in: “The full three points again away from home! #rollon”

Liverpool midfielder Lucas Leiva ‏(@LucasLeiva87) is happy to mark his return from injury with a win: “Happy to be back playing. Great result today. Well done everyone ! #LFC”

Finally, Liverpool forward Luis Suarez ‏(@luis16suarez) vows the Reds will keep fighting in the title race: “Very happy with this great victory! We continue fighting up there! Great debut of my new @adidasUK Samba Primeknit!”
