David Moyes has insisted that Sir Alex Ferguson has been “very supportive” ahead of Manchester United’s second leg against Olympiacos on Wednesday.

The current Red Devils manager has been coming under increasing pressure in recent weeks after a string of below-par results which culminated in a 3-0 loss to Liverpool on Sunday.

I speak with him regularly and when he is at the games. He has been very supportive

Moyes succeeded Sir Alex Ferguson last summer after the 71-year-old manager opted to call time on his decorated 26-year reign at the 20-time English champions.

“I speak with him regularly and when he is at the games. He has been very supportive,” Moyes said.

“He told me it would be a difficult job before I came in, but he and [vice chairman] Ed [Woodward] are very supportive.”

United need to overturn a two-goal deficit from their first leg in Greece for only the third time in their history to reach the Champions League last eight.

And Moyes conceded the Red Devils are facing a difficult challenge at Old Trafford on Wednesday night.

“I was looking back, it’s only twice Manchester United have done it [come back from two goals down], I think 1984 is the most recent one. It’s not something that happens a lot but it’s something we believe we have to make happen,” Moyes said.

“I see the players every day, the qualities they show me. I think they know they can play better, I don’t think any of them are questioning that. I’ve got belief in the players. We’ll try and make that happen tomorrow night.”

Man United v Olympiacos: Pre-match facts

• United have a 100% home record in the Champions League, having beaten Bayer 04 Leverkusen, Real Sociedad and Shakhtar Donetsk. Another victory would spell their best sequence in the competition at Old Trafford since 2007/08, when they went on to win the competition.

• United have mounted a successful fightback only once after a first-leg defeat in the Champions League. That came when they overwhelmed Roma 7-1 after a 2-1 reverse in Italy in the 2006/07 quarter-finals.

• Shinji Kagawa’s Borussia Dortmund beat Olympiacos 3-1 at home but lost 1-0 away in the 2011-12 group stage.

• United have scored 548 goals in Uefa competition and conceded 299.
