Tottenham 1 Benfica 3: Tim Sherwood blasts classless Jorge Jesus
Tottenham 1 Benfica 3: Tim Sherwood criticises his contemporary Jorge Jesus following a heavy first-leg loss
Tim Sherwood hit out at classless Jorge Jesus after Benfica secured a commanding first-leg win against Tottenham Hotspur at White Hart Lane.
Spurs lacked confidence and the Portuguese leaders capitalised as former Bolton Wanderers striker Rodridgo finished past Hugo Lloris in the 29th minute.
I thought his team were very good, got a lot of class. It’s a pity he doesn’t
Benfica added a second shortly after half-time through centre-half Luisao before Christian Eriksen’s superb free-kick handed Tottenham a lifeline.
However, veteran defender Luisao smashed home his second of the night and Benfica’s third to leave Spurs on the brink of an exit from Europe.
Manager Jesus celebrated his captain’s brace by celebrating in front of Sherwood with three fingers raised, sparking an angry reaction from the Spurs boss.
Sherwood said: “I thought his team were very good, got a lot of class. It’s a pity he doesn’t.”
Meanwhile, Spurs captain Younes Kaboul called on his team-mates to work harder on the pitch as the defender attempted to remain positive ahead of the second leg.
“We started the game well, brightly, but we conceded a goal – I don’t even know where it came from. We should be marking better after conceding from two set pieces.
“We have to give it our all next week. We have a big squad and need to work harder on the pitch. In football, anything is possible and we will go there to win.”
