Darren Fletcher has heaped praise on Manchester United’s talisman Wayne Rooney after the striker inspired his side to a 4-1 victory over Aston Villa on Saturday.

The Red Devils forward overturned Ashley Westwood’s early opener to give David Moyes’s side a half-time lead at Old Trafford and relieve pressure on the United boss.

He’s been fantastic. He’s a real leader and he’s really starting to show that now in his performances

The 28-year-old, who signed a new five-and-a-half year deal in February, has scored 15 goals in 27 Premier League appearances this season.

“Wayne has been a talisman for us this season,” Darren Fletcher told MUTV.

“He’s been fantastic. He’s a real leader and he’s really starting to show that now in his performances.

“You could say he has always done that but his consistency levels are really good; he’s a fantastic player and we’re glad he’s staying with us.

“He’ll go on to achieve more great success.”

Fletcher backed Juan Mata, who scored his first United goal against the Birmingham outfit, to kick on following his £37.1m move from Chelsea in January.

“He’s a fantastic player and is a great lad in the dressing room,” Fletcher added.

“He’s come here and settled in at the club; we’re pleased to have him here. He’s been desperate for that goal and he’s glad it’s come now.

“Hopefully he can kick on and get a few more towards the end of the season.”
