Tottenham moved back up to sixth place in the Premier League table thanks to a 5-1 thrashing of Sunderland at White Hart Lane on Monday.

Lee Cattermole gave the Black Cats the lead at White Hart Lane, but the home side levelled soon after when Emmanuel Adebayor converted Christian Eriksen’s cross in the 28th minute.

Eriksen then set up Harry Kane for a tap-in on the hour-mark, before the Dane made it 3-1 with an accurate low strike into the bottom corner.

Adebayor turned in his second after Vito Mannone saved Kane’s shot, with Gylfi Sigurdsson smashing in a fifth to complete the rout.

Monday’s Premier League clash prompted plenty of post-match activity on Twitter – and here are our favourite updates.

Ex-England forward Michael Owen (@themichaelowen) claims that he foresaw the result: “I knew Sunderland would get something from tonight’s game – a good spanking!”

Former Spurs forward Gary Lineker (@GaryLineker) tweets a tongue-in-cheek response to the media speculation over the Tottenham manager’s future: “Give Tim Sherwood the job for life!”

Chris Kamara (@chris_kammy) comes out in support of Sherwood: “Prem record 2date Won10 drew2 lost5 not bad 4his first attempt & showed real dignity today having been told he won’t be there next season”

Spurs winger Andros Townsend (@andros_townsend) congratulates the impressive Kane: “Congrats to @hkane28 fully deserved that goal and performance tonight! Been a beast in training last few months!!”

Sunderland defender Carlos Cuellar (@Cuellar24) pays tribute to the travelling fans: “I know it is a difficult moment just say thanks very much for the supporter they were fantastic all game”

Winger Aaron Lennon (@Aaron7Lennon) chimes in after the rout: “Finally a comfortable win for us, buzzing for @hkane28 today on his goal and performance!!! #COYS”

And finally, Spurs youngster Harry Kane (@hkane28) tweets his delight: “What a feeling that was ! Great performance from the lads ! Proud to get my 1st start and goal in premier league for spurs ! #buzzing #coys”
