Aguero, Garcia & more: Twitter reacts as Man City beat Southampton
Sergio Aguero and Javi Garcia both tweet their thoughts after Manchester City are 4-1 winners against Soutampton
Manchester City moved to within a point of Premier League leaders Liverpool after a 4-1 victory over Southampton at Etihad Stadium.
A controversial Samir Nasri goal and Edin Dzeko’s 11th Premier League strike of the season swung the match in City’s favour after Rickie Lambert had levelled following Yaya Toure’s early spot-kick.
Substitute Stevan Jovetic polished off the win, and here is a selection of our favourite Twitter reaction from the professionals, past and present, in chronological order to City’s impressive win.
QPR midfielder Joey Barton (@Joey7Barton) is concerned for Jay Rodriguez after the forward goes down with a knee injury: “Rodriguez has done his ligaments here. Might be out of the World Cup. Fingers crossed for him its not. Been on fire the lad […] Horrible looking. I hope I am completely wrong but that looks like a bad one.”
Former Manchester City midfielder Dietmar Hamann (@DietmarHamann) is similarly concerned for the Southampton man: “Gutted for Jay Rodriguez. What a fantastic season he has had. Will weaken England if he’s out the World Cup.”
England legend Gary Lineker (@GaryLineker) tweets his thoughts: “Very much hope that the Jay Rodriguez injury is not as serious as it appears to be.”
Former Everton man Don Hutchison (@donhutch4) feels the Premier League needs a winter to break to prevent this from happening: “When are the Prem players gonna get a winter break!
No chance of keeping your best players fit for World Cups/Euros.”
More from Lineker (@GaryLineker): “I guess that’s, over to you, Chelsea and Liverpool […] I think even @VincentKompany when he comes in for MOTD tonight will admit City’s 2nd goal was offside.”
Southampton defender Calum Chambers (@CalumChambers95) wishes his team-mate well: “Disappointing result today, wishing Jay Rod a quick recovery!!”
City midfielder Javi Garcia (@javigarcia06) is eyeing the title: “Another step towards our objective…. Come on City!! #ManchesterCity”
Injured City striker Sergio Aguero (@aguerosergiokun) praises his team-mates: “Very glad to keep adding up points by the threes! Now let’s get fully ready for our next encounter. C’mon City!”
Finally, former Liverpool striker Michael Owen (@themichaelowen) tweets his thoughts: “Another entertaining game at The Etihad today. Southampton were brilliant first half but City cruised to victory in the end.”
