Mikel Arteta singled out Mesut Ozil for special praise after the playmaker inspired Arsenal to a comfortable victory over Newcastle.

The north London side took the lead in the 26th minute when Laurent Koscielny prodded home Santi Cazorla’s free-kick.

We’re really pleased to have people like him back and performing at the top level

Ozil tapped in to double their lead three minutes before half-time after Olivier Giroud’s effort was saved.

And the French striker headed in the third after the break to move the Gunners four points clear of fifth-placed Everton with two games to play.

“He’s very important for the team,” said Arteta of man-of-the-match Ozil. “He was missed when he was injured.

“We missed very important players at a really important period of the season so we’re really pleased to have people like him back and performing at the top [level] because that’s what we need.”

The result means that Arsenal can secure qualification for next season’s Champions League with victory over West Bromwich Albion at Emirates Stadium on Sunday.

And midfielder Arteta called on Arsene Wenger’s side to keep their momentum.

“It was a good win. We had most of the chances and the possession,” he said. “It was really important for us to win tonight and the goal difference can be really important so we’re really pleased with the performance.

“We need to keep it up because everything is really tight. There are two games to go. We want to finish on a high and have the final of the FA Cup as well.”
