Arsenal 3 Newcastle 0: Wenger backs Ozil to continue improving
Arsenal 3 Newcastle 0: Arsene Wenger is expecting Mesut Özil to continue improving in the closing stages of the season
Arsene Wenger believes that Arsenal fans are now starting to see the best of Mesut Ozil after the playmaker inspired the Gunners to victory over Newcastle.
The north London side took the lead in the 26th minute at Emirates Stadium when Laurent Koscielny prodded home Santi Cazorla’s free-kick.
Ozil he looks sharp again, physically and mentally. That’s why his performance was good
Ozil tapped in to double their advantage three minutes before half-time after Olivier Giroud’s effort was saved.
And the French striker headed in the third after the break to move the Gunners four points clear of fifth-placed Everton with two games to play.
Ozil suffered a dip in form before a spell on the sidelines with a hamstring injury – and Wenger feels that the Germany international is now beginning to hit top form again.
“He’s getting stronger in every game now,” said Wenger. “He’s refreshed – it’s his first season over here and I think over Christmas he suffered a little bit physically.
“Now he looks sharp again, physically and mentally. That’s why his performance was good.”
Wenger continued: “I believe that the first season is always [about] adaptation in the Premier League.
“What he has brought is fantastic technique, the simplicity of his game and intelligence of his passing.
“You look at his numbers, and his assists and passes in the final third are very good. We want some more goals from him [but] I think that will come naturally.”
The victory means that Arsenal can secure qualification for next season’s Champions League with a win over West Bromwich Albion at Emirates Stadium on Sunday.
And Wenger added: “We would love for the season to be longer. We were top of the league but lost too many players at the crucial point of the season.
“We are four points ahead of Everton and we want to take maximum points from now until the end of the season.”
