Arsene Wenger has hailed Lukas Podolski as a “fantastic finisher” after the Arsenal striker’s double in a 3-1 win against West Ham United.

The Germany international cancelled out Matt Jarvis’s opener with a powerful strike before half-time and went on to seal three points with a finish into the roof of Adrian’s net in the 78th minute.

He is a fantastic finisher because he has unbelievable power and a very short backlift

Podolski has scored six Premier League goals in an injury-hit campaign, but Wenger admitted he is reluctant to play the 28-year-old in a central striker role despite his prolific form.

“I played him centre forward a few times and I felt he came a lot to the ball, more like an off-striker than a target striker,” Podolski told Arsenal’s website.

“But he is a fantastic finisher because he has unbelievable power and a very short backlift. So the one you want to have a chance is him.”

Podolski spoke about his unhappiness at being regularly substituted earlier this week after completing 90 minutes just twice this season before the Hammers clash.

And Arsenal manager Wenger explained his decision to leave Podolski on for the full quota at The Emirates on Tuesday night.

“First of all you do not always substitute players linked with the performance, sometimes yes, on Saturday yes, but sometimes not, sometimes you want to change tactically, sometimes you want a better defensive balance when you’re 3-1 up,” he added.

“It depends, it is always a different reason.”
