Arsene Wenger is backing Mesut Ozil to rediscover his best form next season and be a contender to win the PFA player of the year award.

Ozil, 25, had come in for criticism for a disappointing run of form after he initially impressed following his move to Arsenal from Real Madrid back in September.

But Wenger is convinced that the Germany international will be one of the Premier League’s standout performers next season.

“Ozil had a jaded period but I will put him on the list to be player of the season next season,” said Wenger.

The Germany international has not featured for Arsenal since picking up a hamstring injury in last month’s 1-1 Champions League draw at Bayern Munich.

And Wenger admitted that it is crucial for his side to get their top attacking players back from injury as they push for a top-four finish.

“We are a team who is used to scoring goals and recently away from home we have not scored so much,” said Wenger. “It’s important we get back our offensive potential.”

Wenger is also hoping that back-to-back victories against Wigan Athletic and West Ham United will stand the Gunners in good stead heading into Sunday’s clash at Hull.

“A team that doesn’t win is not happy,” he added. “To play great football you need to be completely confident and believe in your play.

“The belief is stronger when your recent history of the team is positive.”
