Arsene Wenger believes that Liverpool’s lack of European football this season has given them a significant advantage in the Premier League title race.

The Reds, who were also knocked out in the early rounds of both domestic cup competitions, moved top of the table with six games left to play after a convincing 4-0 victory over Tottenham at Anfield last weekend.

City have two games in hand and the two games are at home, where they are strong in the Premier League

But although Wenger feels that the Merseyside club are benefiting from having just one competition to focus on, the Arsenal manager does not believe that they are the clear favourites for the title.

“There will be still a lot of twists and turns in the Premier League until the end of the season,” said Wenger. “There is no clear favourite.

“Liverpool has an advantage [because] they haven’t played in any other competition other than the Premier League for a long, long time, so they have only one target and they can be stable in their preparation. That’s a little advantage but it will be very tight.

“Mathematically it’s possible [that Liverpool can win the title but] I don’t know more than you. Nobody knows, that’s why it’s interesting.

“It’s a possibility that Liverpool can win the Premier League, of course. But I don’t know… City have two games in hand and the two games are at home, where they are strong in the Premier League so they have a huge advantage.”

Wenger’s Arsenal travel to Everton on Sunday afternoon looking increase the four-point advantage that they currently hold over Roberto Martinez’s side.

And the Frenchman, whose side are currently fourth, insists that the north London club still have their destiny in their own hands.

“Behind us [in the table] we depend only on our results, in front of us will depend on our results and the results of the other teams, so that’s impossible to predict,” he added.
