Arsene Wenger sticks up for Arsenal’s ‘fantastic’ Olivier Giroud
Arsene Wenger defends Olivier Giroud after the Arsenal striker started on the bench in FA Cup semi-final
Arsene Wenger has come out in support of Olivier Giroud after the Arsenal striker started Sunday’s FA Cup semi-final on the bench.
The France international was used as a second-half substitute against Wigan at Wembley as Wenger opted to deploy youngster Yaya Sanogo up front against the Latics.
He has gone through a little bit more of a difficult period, but that happens to any striker
Recent reports have claimed that the Gunners are ready to offload Giroud in the summer, despite the forward having scored 13 league goals and made seven assists in 31 games.
But Wenger insists that he was simply giving the striker a rest after gruelling campaign with the north London club.
“He has a fantastic spirit, Olivier Giroud is a fantastic team player,” said Wenger.
“He has gone through a little bit more of a difficult period, but that happens to any striker.
“Striker is the most demanding position, he has played many, many games – more games than any other striker in the Premier League, and that of course is very demanding.”
Speaking after Saturday’s penalty shootout win over Wigan, Wenger insisted that there is plenty to come from Sanogo.
“He showed great potential but he’s still too much mentally determined to score at any costs,” said Wenger.
“When he calms down I think there is a lot to come from him.”
