Aston Villa 1 Fulham 2: Magath hopes ‘great win’ can spur Cottagers to safety
Aston Villa 1 Fulham 2: Felix Magath says he is proud of the Cottagers's performance at Villa Park
Felix Magath believes Fulham’s “great victory” can spur them to Premier League survival after a narrow win against Aston Villa.
After a goalless first half, former Manchester United midfielder Kieran Richardson put the visitors in front courtesy of a strike from the edge of the area at Villa Park.
With this victory, we are very confident to go on for the rest of the season
The home side drew level thanks to Grant Holt’s first strike for the Birmingham outfit with 20 minutes remaining, but Hugo Rodellaga finished from close range to seal three points.
Fulham move to within five points of safety after Norwich were beaten by West Bromwich Albion, and Magath heaped praise on the Cottagers after securing his first away win in the Premier League.
“It was a great victory for us. I feel very proud of my team. We fought back and we won a big game,” Magath told BBC Sport.
“Richardson’s goal was goal of the month. He’s a very important player for us, but after their equaliser we came back to fight and that was very important for us.
“With this victory, we are very confident to go on for the rest of the season.”
Meanwhile, Aston Villa manager Paul Lambert is remaining optimistic about his side’s chances of survival, with the 1982 European Cup winners seven points above the relegation zone.
“It was a really open game, with chances at both ends, but it was disappointing to lose,” Lambert added.
“There are a lot of games left and you look to see who’s playing who. A lot of teams are in the same situation as ourselves.
“I thought Grant Holt was excellent. He led the line great for us and produced a terrific header for the goal.”
