Atletico Madrid

Thibaut Courtois After all the debate surrounding him prior to the game, the Belgian was barely called upon as the Atletico defence manned the line well. 6/10

Juanfran Peppered the Chelsea six-yard box with a continuous stream of crosses that always seemed to find the head of Garcia. 7

Miranda Gave away a free-kick on the edge of box to get yellow in the closing exchanges. 6

Diego Godín Patrolled the line well to keep Torres and his team-mates quiet all night. 6

Filipe Luis Regularly bombed down the left but was outshone by Juanfran on the otherside. 6

Mario Suarez Great strike in the 34th minute from just outside the box that had Schwarzer scampering across his goal. 6

Gabi Got a yellow with 15 minutes to go for a clash with Mikel, subsequently forced a great save from Schwarzer with a free-kick. 6

Koke Found himself on the ball a lot, however, he didn’t contribute much in terms of attacking threat. 6

Raúl García The big number eight looked sharp all night, trying to make darting runs around the two Chelsea centre-halves. Had a header just over on the half-hour mark when he towered above Cole. Should have done better when he had a free-header late on. 7

Diego Ribas First chance he got on goal was his last action of the night. Was well-marshalled before being replaced by Turan. 6

Diego Costa In his seventh year on the Atletico books, he showed his classes in glimpses but never put himself forward to get into threatening positions. Had a good chance to change things late on but headed straight at Schwarzer. 6

Substitutes

Arda Turan Back after three weeks out with a groin problem. Replaced Diego in the 60th minute. 6

Jose Sose Came on for Suarez in the 79th minute as a more attacking option and made his presence felt with a few crosses after that. 6

David Villa Has scored more goals for Spain that anyone else, however, that didn’t help him here after replacing Garcia in the 86th minute. n/a

Chelsea

Petr Cech Injured in the 15th minute when dislocating his shoulder after a challenge from Garcia. Looked solid before that. 6

Cesar Azpilicueta Important block to deny Costa in the 41st minute when a goal looked on the cards. 6

Gary Cahill (Man-of-the-match) The only time he was caught out was when he won a free-kick from Turan who was climbing all over him. Stepped up manfully when his captain went off injured. 8

John Terry He made clearance after clearance all night. Tried to fight on through the pain barrier when he got injured in the 70th minute and was a huge loss when he went off. 7

Ashley Cole Was great defensively apart from the odd slip. Did well considering his lack of first-team football. 6

John Obi Mikel Put himself about all over the pitch as he cut off the distribution lines to the Atletico frontmen. Out of the second-leg after picking up a yellow in the 75th minute. 8

David Luiz Hasn’t played since the second leg against Paris Saint-Germain. His average free-kicks said everything about his display. 6

Frank Lampard Yellow card for a tackle on Turan in the 63rd minute means he will miss the second-leg. Was lucky not to get a second yellow for a deliberate handball. 6

Ramires Wasted a great opportunity in the 27th minute when he should have taken Miranda on, but decided to shoot. 6

Fernando Torres Joined Atletico as an 11-year-old. Third start in five weeks and his poor first touch showed exactly why. Played a lone striker role and looked a little isolated. Had on great run on the hour but to no avail. 7

Willian Looked energetic in the opening half but faded in the second 45 and was hauled off for Ba. 6

Substitutes

Mark Schwarzer Came on for Cech in the 17th minute to become the second oldest player in Champions League history. Showed a great pair of hands often and looked solid. Great save from a Gabi free-kick with 15 minutes left. 7

Andre Schurrle Replaced Terry in the 70th minute. Showed good work-rate to with a throw-in for his team when they were under pressure. 6

Demba Ba Came on in the dying embers for Willian. n/a
