Aviva Premiership: Mike Brown heads player of the season shortlist

Aviva Premiership: Harlequins full-back Mike Brown heads the six-man shortlist for player of the season

England full-back Mike Brown and Fijian wing Niki Goneva lead a six-man shortlist for the Aviva Premiership player of the season.

Tigers star Goneva, who recently agreed a new deal to stay at Welford Road, has been impressive all season, topping the try-scoring table with 11 from 16 appearances.

Brown, who was player of the tournament in this year’s Six Nations, has enjoyed a stellar season and has scored four tries in 13 Premiership appearances for Harlequins.

“There were a number of compelling candidates for this prestigious title and it was very difficult to reduce it to a six-man shortlist,” said rugby director of Premiership Rugby, Phil Winstanley.

“I think the panel managed to arrive at a very balanced list, forwards and backs side by side.

“We’ve had an incredible season so far, and the length of the deliberations for the awards reflects the current standard of Aviva Premiership rugby.

“The closeness of the matches is reflected in the fact that no one club has more than one player on the shortlist.”

Worcester Warriors’ full-back Chris Pennell has impressed despite his club being rooted to the bottom of the table, while league leaders Saracens are represented by flanker Jacques Burger.

Play-off hopefuls Sale Sharks have skipper Dan Braid on the shortlist with Northampton Saints’ lock Samu Manoa completing the shortlist.

The winner will be announced on Thursday 15 May ahead of the Premiership semi-finals.
