Barcelona defender Dani Alves bites back after racist banana gesture
Barcelona defender Dani Alves picks up a banana thrown by a supporter and eats it as the Catalan side beat Villarreal
Dani Alves has been widely applauded after the Barcelona defender’s unique reaction to a racist gesture during a 3-2 victory at Villarreal.
The Brazil international was jogging over to take a corner when a fan threw a banana at the experienced Barcelona right-back on Sunday night.
The 30-year-old scooped the fruit off the turf at Estadio El Madrigal before devouring the banana, giving the full-back a timely energy boost.
Following the incident, former and current players heaped praise on Alves for his original response to the racist gesture. England legend and former Barcelona striker Gary Lineker led the way.
Someone in the crowd just threw a banana at Dani Alves. Picked it up, peeled it, ate it, and proceeded to take the corner. Top response.

Utterly brilliant reaction from Alves. Treat the racist berk with complete disdain!
