Liverpool will be very competitive in the midfield “jungle” against Manchester City, Brendan Rodgers has promised.

The Reds will come up against one of the Premier League’s most powerful midfields when the leaders take on Manuel Pellegrini’s men at Anfield in the potential title decider on Sunday.

For us, we will look forward to that battle. It is an area we like to dominate in a lot of our games and I’m sure we’ll contest it very competitively

City are expected to start tenacious duo Fernandinho and Yaya Toure in the heart of their midfield, with Spanish wizard David Silva pulling the strings higher up the pitch.

Steven Gerrard and Jordan Henderson have received plenty of plaudits over the course of the season, and Rodgers is backing his Reds side to win the midfield battle.

“It always is – that’s the jungle of the pitch. That’s where it is busy. They have lots of quality in there and we’ll see that at the weekend,” Rodgers told his pre-match media conference.

“They have a world-class player in Yaya Toure. Since he has come into this country, I’ve seen him a lot.

“In his career, particularly at Barcelona, he played as a holding player but he played at centre-half for some games.

“He has come in and been a real attacking force for them. A player with great quality.

“Fernandinho has come in and been a real rock in midfield. David Silva in that number 10 role is one of the best in the world.

“For us, we will look forward to that battle. It is an area we like to dominate in a lot of our games and I’m sure we’ll contest it very competitively.”
