Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers praises the Reds for securing their place in the Champions League
Brendan Rodgers congratulated Liverpool after the Reds secured a top-three finish thanks to a slender win at Norwich City.
Liverpool surged into a 2-0 lead inside 11 minutes courtesy of Raheem Sterling’s long-range strike and Luis Suarez’s close-range finish to take full advantage of Chelsea’s loss to Sunderland.
We’ve cemented the first objective, which was to qualify for the Champions League
However, relegation-threatened Norwich hit back through Gary Hooper before Sterling scored his second of the afternoon thanks to a brilliant counter-attacking goal at Carrow Road.
Robert Snodgrass netted with 13 minutes remaining to ensure a tense finish, and Liverpool held on to move five points clear at the top and secure a return to the Champions League.
“It was an incredible victory and big congratulations to the players because we can finish no lower than third, which guarantees Champions League football. A wonderful win,” Rodgers said.
“At the beginning of the season, I think everyone thought it would be a struggle for us to even get to fourth, so it shows the magnitude of the effort the players have put in, to have at least guaranteed that at this stage and have Champions League football at Anfield again next season.”
He added: “We want to be one of the very few teams to reach 100-plus goals in a season, so we’ve still got other objectives.
“But we’ve cemented the first objective, which was to qualify for the Champions League. Now we will look forward to next weekend, which will be a great atmosphere at Anfield.”
