‘Brendan Rodgers should pick Lucas Leiva to fill Liverpool’s midfield void’
Former Chelsea striker Tony Cascarino expects Brendan Rodgers to ask Lucas Leiva to fill Jordan Henderson's void in midfield
Brendan Rodgers is facing a midfield dilemma as the Liverpool manager ways up his options to replace suspended Jordon Henderson, according to Tony Cascarino.
The 23-year-old Reds midfielder received a straight red in injury time for a high challenge in a 3-2 victory over Manchester City at Anfield on Sunday.
I think Lucas will be the better option because of the experience
It means the England international will miss trips to Norwich City and Crystal Palace, as well as a crunch clash against Chelsea at Anfield.
And former Chelsea striker Cascarino feels Rodgers will opt for Lucas Leiva ahead of Joe Allen due to the Brazilian’s experience.
Cascarino said: “They’ve got Lucas or Allen. It’s one or the other. Does he want to go with a more experienced guy in Lucas or a guy that has come to the club and been in and out of the team?
“It’s a tough call for him and he has to get it right.”
The ex-Blues man continued: “Personally, I think Lucas will be the better option because of his experience.
“Because they go away to Norwich and keeping that midfield a bit more compact. I’m not sure Allen is ready to go into that environment in the last few games.”
Former Arsenal striker Alan Smith added: “I think Allen has done well when he has come into the side. I don’t think Rodgers would hesitate at all.
“It’s horses for courses. Depends on the opposition. You wonder who he will play when Chelsea come to town.”
