Brendan Rodgers reckons Liverpool’s 4-0 victory over Tottenham Hotspur was psychologically their biggest of the season.

The Reds approached the Spurs clash knowing three points would be sufficient to send them to the top of the table and two points clear of Chelsea.

Our victory over Tottenham was psychologically our best victory of the season because of some of the background noise going into the game about pressure

And Rodgers was thrilled with the manner of Liverpool’s win as his Reds players coped with the increased pressure heaped on their shoulders.

“Our objective was always to qualify for the Champions League. If we trace it back to the beginning of the season everyone recognised that was going to be a really difficult task for us,” Rodgers told his pre-match media conference.

“We’re in a great position, of course, at this moment but the finish line is quite a way out. People are looking at it with six games to go and thinking it’s nearly there but there’s still a way to go and there’s still a lot of work to do.

“Our victory over Tottenham was psychologically our best victory of the season because of some of the background noise going into the game about pressure.

“The level that we played at in terms of control and calmness of performance shows the confidence in the team.”

Rodgers added that Liverpool aren’t thinking about their title rivals Chelsea and Manchester City ahead of their clash against West Ham United this weekend.

“No not at all. In particular now, I feel we can’t afford to worry about any other teams. Man City are a squad full of outstanding players, an excellent manager and building for a number of years,” Rodgers continued.

“Chelsea have brilliant players and a world-class manager. If I spend my time worrying about our rivals and what they’ve got, I’d be wasting my time.”
