Chelsea 1 Atletico Madrid 3: Simeone deflects praise onto players
Chelsea 1 Atletico Madrid 3: Diego Simeone cannot hide his delight after guiding his La Liga side to Champions League final
Diego Simeone could not hide his delight after watching his Atletico Madrid side come from behind to beat Chelsea and reach the Champions League final.
Fernando Torres gave the Blues the lead in the 36th minute at Stamford Bridge, but Adrian Lopez restored parity on the stroke of half-time when he turned home Juanfran’s cutback.
Atletico then went ahead in the 60th minute thanks to Diego Costa’s penalty after the Spain international was fouled by substitute Samuel Eto’o in the box.
I want to congratulate the mothers of these players because they gave them big cojones to play like they did today
Arda Turan cemented a comfortable victory by netting the visitors’ third in the 72nd minute to fire Atletico into a final showdown against local rivals Real Madrid in Lisbon.
“Of course I’m very happy,” said Simeone. “How we reacted to their goal was crucial.
“We then started the second half very well. When we got to 2-1 that pretty much settled the game. We controlled it after that.
“Congratulations to the players and staff at this club because without their hard work this wouldn’t have been possible.”
He added: “I want to congratulate the mothers of these players because they gave them big cojones to play like they did today.”
Meanwhile, Atletico midfielder Tiago agreed with his manager in his assessment of the game.
“It is not easy to play here, we know that,” said Tiago. “But we knew Chelsea had to play more. We knew we are very good away from home. After our goal Chelsea went a bit down, we got confident and now we are there.
“It’s a dream, we have a great spirit, we are a great team, we all work together, now we are in the final in Lisbon, the dreams can be true.”
