Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho a genius, says Liverpool legend
Former Liverpool midfielder Ray Houghton heaps praise on Jose Mourinho after Chelsea's 2-0 win at Anfield
Ray Houghton has described Jose Mourinho as “a genius” after the Chelsea manager masterminded a 2-0 victory at Liverpool.
The Blues scored in stoppage time at the end of each half as Demba Ba capitalised on Steven Gerrard’s mistake before Willian scored a second on the counter-attack.
Mourinho’s defensive-minded approach helped bring Liverpool’s 11-game winning run to a shuddering halt, and former Reds midfielder Houghton praised the Chelsea boss.
Having spoken to a lot of former Chelsea players, there is only one way to do it: The Mourinho way
“He knew what he wanted to do defensively and every player bought into it. They did their job supremely well,” Houghton told Sky Sports.
“He’s brilliant at it. Any manager who can get Samuel Eto’o to play right wing to win the Champions League is a genius.
“This lad is an out-and-out goal-scorer and very single-minded, and yet, he did what Mourinho asked him to do over the course of the season.
“Having spoken to a lot of former Chelsea players, there is only one way to do it: The Mourinho way.
“It is all about what Mourinho tells them and they believe in him 100 per cent.”
Houghton added that Juan Mata wouldn’t have been able to carry out Mourinho’s tactical master plan at Liverpool.
“Brendan Rodgers saying it is not difficult to organise a team to play like that… he is absolutely right. What is difficult is to get the players with the football intelligence to buy into it,” Houghton added.
“Juan Mata wouldn’t have played yesterday. He couldn’t have done what Andre Schurrle did or Mohamed Salah did. Every Chelsea player bought into what Jose Mourinho asked of them in that game.
“He knows instinctively that he has bright footballers, intelligent players who will buy into what he is saying. They are disciplined enough to stay there and won’t run out of positions.”
