Chelsea transfers: Jose Mourinho hints at £40-50m summer signing
Chelsea transfers: Jose Mourinho says the Blues are in a position to spend up to £50m on a signing this summer
Jose Mourinho that insists Chelsea can afford to splurge up to £50m on a top signing in the summer transfer window.
The Blues boss is acutely aware of the need to comply with Uefa’s Financial Fair Play rules as Mourinho attempts to complete his pursuit of a proven goal-scorer for the west London club ahead of next season.
Chelsea can’t do that with four or five players and make an investment of £200m or £250m. I think Chelsea can do that with one player
Eden Hazard and Oscar have been linked with potential big-money moves to Paris Saint-Germain in the summer, which could fund Chelsea’s move for a big-name striker.
But Mourinho is adamant that he won’t be allowing key players to leave the club at the end of the season and says the Blues won’t have any problems landing one world-class signing.
Asked how Chelsea would fund any potential move for a striker this summer, Mourinho replied: “Not by selling our best players. We will do what we can, we won’t do what we can’t. For sure we won’t do by selling the best players.”
Chelsea have been linked with a move for Edinson Cavani, who failed to score in PSG’s 3-1 victory over the Blues in the first leg of their Champions League quarter-final on Wednesday night.
Another name touted as a potential Chelsea target is Colombia international Radamel Falcao, despite the 27-year-old moving in a £50m deal to Monaco from Atletico Madrid last summer.
And although Mourinho didn’t name any possible targets, the Chelsea manager is adamant that the Blues have the financial freedom to spend up to £50m on one player this summer.
“I think Chelsea can do that [sign a player for up to £50m],” he added
“Chelsea can’t do that with four or five players and make an investment of £200m or £250m. I think Chelsea can do that with one player – that is the work Chelsea is doing. It is possible, yes.”
