Chelsea transfers: Martinez unfazed by Tottenham’s interest in Lukaku
Tottenham transfers: Roberto Martinez says Romelu Lukaku was always going to be the subject of rumours after a strong season
Roberto Martinez admits he is not surprised by intense speculation surrounding Romelu Lukaku ahead of the summer transfer window.
The Belgium international, who is currently on loan at Everton from Chelsea, has been linked with a switch to Tottenham after his agent confirmed talks with Spurs chairman Daniel Levy.
Romelu has been performing very well and you’re going to get that speculation
The 20-year-old has scored 12 goals and made six assists in 24 Premier League appearances for the Toffees after making the temporary switch to Goodison Park last summer.
Everton have been linked with a permanent deal for the striker amid reports Chelsea are ready to cash in, but Martinez isn’t thinking about Lukaku’s future and wants the Belgian to finish the season in style.
“You need to understand there is going to be a lot of speculation and a lot of talk,” Martinez told his pre-match media conference.
“Romelu has been performing very well and you’re going to get that speculation.
“When you get a player who has been on loan and there is a little bit of uncertainty and he doesn’t perform well or reach certain expectations, then there isn’t much to talk.
“Romelu has been an incredible asset for us and a credit to his parent club. He has been developing as a young man and fulfilling his potential which I believe is huge.
“What we want now is him to concentrate on the next seven games to finish as strongly as we can. Whatever happens in the summer, it will be something good with the season that he has had.
“It can only be positive.”
