‘Chelsea will have one eye on Champions League at Liverpool’

Graham Stuart reckons Chelsea could prioritise reaching the Champions League final ahead of their trip to Liverpool

Graham Stuart reckons Chelsea will give up their Premier League title dream and focus on the Champions League ahead of their trip to leaders Liverpool next Sunday.

The Blues trail Brendan Rodgers’s side by five points after a surprise 2-1 loss to the Premier League’s basement club, Sunderland, at Stamford Bridge on Saturday.

You’d expect Chelsea to go up there [Anfield] and give a good account of themselves, but you can’t help but think they’ll have an eye on the Champions League semi-final

Chelsea’s potential title decider against the Reds is sandwiched between the first and second leg of their Champions League semi-final clash against Atletico Madrid.

And former Everton midfielder Stuart reckons Jose Mourinho will opt to focus on winning his first Champions League crown with Chelsea.

“I think the most exciting thing from Liverpool’s perspective are the two games either side – the Atletico Madrid games,” Stuart told Sky Sports.

“Are Chelsea looking at it now, thinking they can’t win the title, so we’ll put all our eggs in one basket and that’s the Champions League. It’s what side Jose Mourinho will put out at Anfield.

“There’s a little bit of history between the two clubs so I can’t imagine that he’ll go there and lay down. That’s not in his character.”

He added: “You’d expect Chelsea to go up there and give a good account of themselves, but you can’t help but think they’ll have an eye on the Champions League semi-final.

“I would guess so because they’re not going to win the league now.”
