Fernando Torres has thanked the Atletico Madrid fans for the reception the Chelsea striker received during Tuesday’s Champions League semi-final at the Vicente Calderon.

The former Atletico captain played the full 90 minutes as Jose Mourinho’s side held the Spanish outfit to a goalless draw in the first leg of their last-four tie.

And the 30-year-old, who has been linked with a move back to Atletico in recent months, was thrilled with the reception he received.

“Coming back here to the Vicente Calderon after seven years couldn’t have been more special, especially doing so in a Champions League semi-final,” said Torres.

“During the game, you have to focus on competing, but before and afterwards, my reception here was spectacular.

“I am eternally grateful to the supporters for the welcome that they gave me.”
