Darren Fletcher wants Manchester United to avenge their aggregate loss to Bayern Munich in 2010 when the Red Devils make the daunting trip to the Allianz Arena on Wednesday.

David Moyes’s struggling side secured a commendable 1-1 draw with the newly-crowned Bundesliga champions Bayern in the first leg of their Champions League quarter-final at Old Trafford.

Yes, there is regret – but there’s regret every time you lose in the Champions League

Fletcher was part of the United side that surrendered a 4-2 aggregate lead to lose on away goals to the 24-time German champions at the Theatre of Dreams in the same stage in 2010.

And the Scotland international admits he still has lingering regret from that loss ahead of tonight’s second leg in Bavaria.

“It’s a big disappointment looking back,” Fletcher told United’s website.

“There was nothing in the game out here but we lost two late goals which were quite sloppy. Then, after dominating the second leg, we were unfortunate to go out, I think.

“Circumstances weren’t with us on the night after a great first-half performance. So yes, there is regret – but there’s regret every time you lose in the Champions League. But that is one I look back on and think it was a real missed opportunity because of how well we played over the two legs.”

Bayern Munich v Man Utd: Pre-match facts

• Bayern have drawn the first leg in Europe 1-1 away 11 times, winning every tie.

• Bayern had been 33 games unbeaten away from home in the Bundesliga (W29 D4), breaking their German top-flight record set between December 1985 and August 1987.

• David Moyes is the first manager to take charge of United in Europe other than Sir Alex Ferguson since Ron Atkinson guided them to the Uefa Cup quarter-finals in 1984-85.

• Patrice Evra is available after a one-match ban in the first leg. Rio Ferdinand is a booking away from a suspension.
