David De Gea: Man United proved critics wrong by drawing with Bayern

Manchester United goalkeeper David De Gea believes the Red Devils showed their strength against Bayern

David De Gea believes Manchester United proved their critics wrong by securing a credible draw with Champions League holders Bayern Munich in the first leg of their quarter-final.

The Red Devils, who are currently languishing in seventh place in the Premier League, took a second-half lead thanks to Nemanja Vidic’s header but Bastian Schweinsteiger levelled the opening leg at Old Trafford before the midfielder was sent off in the closing minutes.

I am happy for that, for the people who thought it would be easy for Bayern. We played a great match and I am happy about that

United were huge underdogs to secure a result against Pep Guardiola’s all-conquering Bayern side ahead of kick-off, and De Gea praised his team-mates after David Moyes’s side showed their character and strength to hold the Bundesliga champions.

“We are satisfied and we feel that we showed a great match,” De Gea told Uefa’s website.

“We put in a lot of effort against a tough opponent. We nearly got a victory as well. I think that we knew we had to defend well, close down the spaces and try to be dangerous on the counter. We produced clear chances and we showed a great match.

“This club is a big club. It is in difficult times when the team can show its strength and how big this club is. I am happy for that, for the people who thought it would be easy for Bayern. We played a great match and I am happy about that. I think there is still a chance. The result is a draw, the tie is still open and we will fight until the end.”
