Jose Mourinho has described David Luiz as a “monster” in the Chelsea midfield after booking their place in the Champions League semi-finals.

The Blues overturned a 3-1 first-leg deficit thanks to a 2-0 victory over Paris Saint-Germain at Stamford Bridge after goals from Andre Schurrle and Demba Ba.

Veteran Frank Lampard and Luiz came up against PSG’s three-man midfield of Thiago Motta, Marco Verratti and Blaise Matuidi.

And Mourinho was impressed with the performance of his midfielders, picking out Brazil international Luiz for special praise after their last-gasp aggregate win.

“They worked like animals my midfield, David Luiz is a monster,” Mourinho is quoted as saying by Daily Mail.

Mourinho added that Chelsea deserved to go through after PSG approached the second leg in a conservative manner.

“We did enough at the beginning of the second half to score before [Ba’s goal] and we couldn’t,” Mourinho told ITV Sport.

“After that, there was a contradiction of what they are and what they wanted to do.

“They played pure counter-attacking game, closing everything, and it was difficult for us to penetrate in the second half of the second half.

“We brought on Fernando Torres and Demba Ba, and we practised that in training. Demba made a crucial finish for us. Very much deserved.”

He added: “The team that decided to defend was punished. The team that gave everything with its heart deserved to go to the semis.”
