Seamus Coleman tipped the race for a fourth-place finish to go down to the wire after Everton moved to within a point of Arsenal thanks to a comfortable win against Manchester United.

With the Gunners emphatic 3-0 winners at Hull City earlier on Sunday, Everton were under pressure to keep pace with the fourth-placed side after a disappointing 3-2 loss to Crystal Palace on Wednesday.

I think it will come down to the wire. There are three tough games. We’ll give it our all and hopefully we’ll sneak in there

And the Toffees took an early lead when Phil Jones was penalised for blocking Romelu Lukaku’s effort with his hand, allowing Leighton Baines to stroke his penalty past David De Gea in the first half.

Everton doubled their lead shortly before the half-time break, with Coleman feeding the ball to Kevin Mirallas and the Belgian powered a low finish past the United goalkeeper.

“It was disappointing mid-week against Palace, so it was a must-win game,” Coleman told Sky Sports.

“We knew it was going to be difficult but the manager made us forget about Palace very quickly and move on. Thankfully we got three points.”

He added: “I think it will come down to the wire. There are three tough games. We’ll give it our all and hopefully we’ll sneak in there.”

Baines dedicated Everton’s win to the Toffees supporters after their slip-up mid-week, with the full-back also lifting the lid on his mindset for his penalty.

“I think it did for the fans. It meant a lot to them. The victory is for them. We wanted to respond for them.

“I knew he was close to it. But I had made my mind up before the game where I was going to go.

“We wanted to respond and show we’ve got that grit about us.”
