Manchester United said David Moyes has not been sacked on Monday but declined to comment when asked about the Scot’s longer-term future at the club.

Widespread media speculation had claimed that the Premier League club will dispense with the Scot’s services following a disastrous first season in charge.

The reports inevitable prompted plenty of activity on Twitter – and here are some of our favourite updates.

Ex-Manchester United man Alan Tonge (@Alan_Tonge) puts the situation into perspective: “If Moyes goes, Liverpool, Chelsea, City, Arsenal and everyone else in the Prem are absolutely gutted. Yes folks, this is how bad it’s become.”

However, former Tottenham chairman Lord Sugar (@Lord_Sugar) doesn’t believe that sacking Moyes would be the right thing to do: “Would be wrong for Man U board to sack David Moyes.Anyone going there the 1st year after Sir A would have struggled. He needs another season”

Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand (@rioferdy5) chimes in after causing a stir by posting a link to ‘Rumours’ by Gregory Isaacs: “We are in a day and age where players are forbidden from having emotions..and we wonder why the distance between players & fans is widening.”

Former England cricket captain Michael Vaughan (@MichaelVaughan) adds his view: “The fact that the Moyes story has leaked out of United tells you a lot about the club at the moment…”

Robbie Savage (@RobbieSavage8) feels that the players must take a share of the blame: “If moyes is to go , some of the players at utd need to have a look at themselves some of their performances have been a disgrace !”

England legend Gary Lineker (@GaryLineker) reckons that the end is nigh for the Scot: “As of this moment David Moyes is still manager of @ManUtd but no denial of the rumours by the club suggests a parting is an inevitability.”

And finally, celebrity Arsenal fan Piers Morgan (@piersmorgan) gives his take on Sir Alex Ferguson’s successor: “Sir Alex recommended Moyes over Mourinho because he feared the latter would eclipse his memory too fast. Harsh, selfish, reality.”
