Gerrard’s loyalty for Liverpool rare in modern sport, says South Africa legend
Former South Africa cricket captain Graeme Smith speaks of his admiration for Reds skipper Steven Gerrard
Graeme Smith believes Steven Gerrard’s loyalty, pride and passion for Liverpool is “rare” in modern sport.
The former captain of the South Africa cricket team attended Liverpool’s 3-2 victory over title rivals Manchester City at Anfield on Sunday.
His [Gerrard’s] loyalty, pride and passion for Liverpool is so rare in these times
Smith, who is a self-confessed Reds fan, is the only South African to captain the Proteas in over 100 Tests before retiring earlier this year.
And South Africa’s youngest-ever skipper is full of admiration for 33-year-old Liverpool midfielder Gerrard, with the Reds top of the table with four games remaining.
“Initially, what has to strike you most about Steven is that you don’t get people like him in modern sport often,” Smith told Liverpool’s website.
“His loyalty, pride and passion for Liverpool is so rare in these times and it makes him unique because just by that, he doesn’t have to say anything. The way he carries himself and the club says enough, he leads by example.
“Another thing I really admire about him is his calmness on the field. Regardless of the pressure or what is needed, he keeps his head and gets his instructions across.
“I watched him constantly talking to his players, guiding them. The thing about Gerrard is what he asks of his team, he delivers himself. It is very easy to follow him, and be inspired by him because his career is leadership enough.”
